As healthcare travelers and travel nurses there are many times when you are in a strange place and you may be there alone. There are a few common sense things you can do to assure your safety in an unknown place.
Familiarize yourself with your destination ahead of time. This can be done easily these days with the use of the internet.
At the top of the list is awareness. Be aware of your surroundings. Don't be distracted by strangers, noises, luggage, etc. Distractions can be deadly. Be alert!
Look and act confident. Act like you know where you are going, even if you don't. Don't look confused. Look for a person of authority if you need to and ask questions.
Stay away from public demonstrations and/or any kind of disturbance.
Don't flash your money. Be discreet with your money and keep it in an inside pocket if possible. Children working with adults are notorious pickpockets in some areas. Once again, be alert!
Don't talk in public about yourself, your travel plans, room numbers, etc. You never know who may be listening.
If you use public wi-fi make sure you log out of all applications, especially any that contain your private info.
Back into a parking space if you are in unfamiliar territory so you can get out quickly if necessary. Park only in well lit areas. Don't use alleys, poorly lit streets or short cuts. Keep your car doors locked, even when you are in the vehicle.
Okay so maybe these sound pretty basic. But sometimes in a new situation you may not think of them. Be safe, be aware and use common sense. Safe travels.
