The Nursery Registered Nurses are the ones who medically attend to newborns in the neonatal unit of a birthing center or hospital. The newborn is initially assessed and stabilized at birth. The Nursery RN assesses the clinical status of the newborn, degree of maturity, depending on gestational age and distinguishes high-risk infants who will require more specific care. The RN in the Nursery plays an important role in the care of newborns and are normally referred to as neonatal nurses. Neonatal care is the care provided an infant in the first 28 days of life.
RN's in the Nursery also work with the parents to help educate them in the care of their newborn. The main goal of the Nursery RN is to discharge the mother and newborn with the parents feeling confident about providing basic child care for their infant.
