The RN in the Progressive Care Unit will provide care for patients who require close monitoring and frequent assessment but do not require ICU. The PCU RN will monitor critical vital signs to detect any changes and enable intervention if necessary in an emergency situation. Most patients who are in this unit are receiving complex medications that must be monitored and adjusted as well. These RN's are also referred to as Step Down Nurses in units such as Cardiac Stepdown, Neuro Stepdown, Surgical Stepdown, Medical Stepdown and ER holding. Patients that are progressing well are moved to these units from the ICU and their needs are less acute.
Do you have two years of experience in this area of expertise? The PCU RN has the following characteristics: clinical judgment, advocacy, caring practices, systems thinking, collaboration, response to diversity and be a teacher as well, to educate the patient and the family.
