How Much Vitamin C Do you Need?

How Much Vitamin C Do you Need?

Well, really that all depends on who you ask. Our bodies do not manufacture or store Vitamin C and therefore you must get it from your diet as it is a very important nutrient for us humans. It is a powerful antioxidant and helps protect the body from damage caused by free radicals. It also reduces the effects of aging, boosts the immune system and protects cellular health. Obviously, each of us have different needs for this essential vitamin. I personally have been taking 4000 mg every day for the past six years. If I am exposed to someone who is sick, or if I am travelling, I boost it even more to give my immune system an extra boost. The recommended daily amount is 100 mg and they don't want you to take any more than 2000 mg as the upper limit. Of course, too much vitamin C can cause gastric issues. Do your research and listen to your body.

There are many ways to get your vitamin C from your food. Brightly colored vegetables like bell peppers are high in Citric Acid (Vitamin C) and citrus fruits are always a great addition. Vitamin C deficiency is common in today's society but is not severe enough to cause scurvy as seen in earlier times. I take a supplement but you have to do your research regarding supplements as well. There are many different types and some are not absorbed well by the body.

Vitamin C benefits our bodies in many ways. It promotes a healthy heart and can even help boost your mood and help with depression. As mentioned above, it is a powerful antioxidant and helps your body reduce oxidative damage and therefore, the free radicals created. It has even been found to be extremely beneficial in major diseases when given intravenously. Vitamin C also boosts collagen production which improves condition of your skin as well as supporting your adrenals.

So….how much Vitamin C do you need? Listen to your body and do your research. That's always the best way to take care of yourself. As travel nurses and professional healthcare travelers it is of the utmost importance to do everything possible to keep your immune systems up and stay healthy.
