Generic Drugs – Are They the Same?

Generic Drugs – Are They the Same?

More than 80% of prescriptions filled in America's pharmacies today are generic drugs, not the original brand name drug. This practice saves patients and the healthcare industry billions of dollars each year. Estimates say it cuts your prescription cost over 65% by using generics. As healthcare professionals and RN's in the industry today you see that most of the medicine administered is generic.

The FDA states that generic drugs can be trusted to provide the same quality as the brand name but for less money.Generic drugs are tested by the FDA the same as the brand name and therefore can be used for the same reason and in the same applications. The FDA will only approve the generic if is the same as the brand name meaning the active ingredient, strength, use and effect, method of ingestion, testing standards and the ability to reach the bloodstream in the same time and to the same extent.

There are differences between generics and brand name. They may be a different color or shape and come in different packaging. Generics can also add flavoring and preservatives that are different from the brand name, as long as the FDA considers these additives safe. The expiration date may be different with generics as well.

Some states do have restrictions against generics for some drugs such as warfarin, digoxin and theophylline, but this varies from state to state in the US. There is a narrow margin between safety and toxicity with these drugs. Additional monitoring while taking these medications is usually required.

Some health insurance carriers require the use of generics when they are available to reduce prescription drug costs. If the brand name drug is used instead the patient may end up paying the difference in cost, which can be very costly.

Overall, generics are considered safe and a cost effective alternative to brand name drugs. Discuss with the prescribing physician if you have questions.
